Issu d’une vieille famille coloniale, il vit avec sa grand-mère, Zoé, qui l’a élevé seule après le départ de ses parents pour le continent, à la Libération.
Élève au lycée français d’Alger, il fréquente la jeunesse dorée, mais aussi les notables, au premier rang desquels André Steiger, le chef des colons à Alger, ami de longue date de Zoé.
Rien ne semble devoir troubler cette adolescence heureuse et protégée, mais petit à petit, l’ombre des « événements » d’Algérie met du sable dans les rouages de sa vie quotidienne.
