Sur un chemin de terre, un homme roulait une cigarette, debout, près d'un side-car vert, scarabée géant, compagnon de solitude. L'homme et sa machine, ensemble. De loin je reconnaissais tous les gestes, Gyl aussi roulait ses cigarettes. Il retenait la pincée de tabac au creux de la main, l'effritait du bout des doigts, la répartissait dans la pliure de la feuille, enfermait le tout après un léger coup de langue sur le bord du papier gommé. L'odeur de miel et de foin flottait, même si j'étais derrière la vitre du compartiment et l'homme à une dizaine de mètres. J'entendais presque le bruissement du tabac, j'imaginais les doigts agiles, le geste machinal, la tête ailleurs. Moment suspendu, rituel, intime. Il n'avait pas un regard pour le train qui reprenait de la vitesse et je pensais que c'était ça aussi le voyage, me réveiller quelque part en Sibérie, mais où ? Voir un homme se rouler une cigarette, le perdre de vue très vite, me souvenir de lui toujours. Aujourd'hui encore, il m'arrive de penser à la brève apparition de cet inconnu surpris dans son intimité, à d'autres aussi qui de façon mystérieuse se sont installés dans ma mémoire, comme des témoins silencieux de mes errances.
